Welcome to Community Charter School!

Community Charter School is a project based K-5 school with an emphasis on the arts located in Charlotte’s historic Cherry neighborhood.   Instead of operating on a one size approach to learning, we treat all students as individuals.  Students are placed in multi-grade classrooms (K-1, 2-3 or 4-5), where education is not a competition, but a place to learn.  Within this classroom community, students learn at their own pace.   In the classroom, a major difference from the local traditional schools is that students do not sit at desks but at tables.  Students are not confined to one place, but move freely around the classroom.  Another difference is that we do not use textbooks for learning, but utilize a hands-on approach.  We believe that kids learn best by doing, and although a textbook can be used as a resource, it should not be the primary way a student should be taught.  Most of the lessons are small group and teachers use a center based approach to learn.  These centers are tailored to the students’ individual levels, while at the same incorporating the multiple intelligences.  In addition to all of these wonderful things, we also have music, dance, art and drama.  Students get exposed to all of the arts, thus developing them socially and emotionally.  Last, at Community Charter School we use the community as a classroom.  Students take public transportation into the community at least twice monthly.  We use ImaginOn for our library, attend Children’s Theatre for various plays, see additional performances, do community outreach, and partner with various artists in the community.  At Community Charter School, we are developing the whole child and see education as a partnership between the school, the families, and the community.  Please view our website for additional details, and schedule a tour.  It is a magical place and one can only really understand it by seeing it.
